2nd Lieut. WILLIAM TURNEY. 8th Battn. South Staffordshire Regiment. Killed 10 July 1916 aged 31. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial 7B.
School: 1893-1899.
Register: DOB 4 March 1884. Admitted: May 1893 aged 9. Son of Frederick Nicholson Turney, 13 Alexandra Street. Leather Dresser. Left 1899.

William was noted as a commercial clerk before joining up. He was formerly an acting sergeant in the Middx Regiment, but was commissioned on 5th April 1915 and went to France in 1916. One of five brothers at the school, he was not noted on the War Memorial for many years although his brother Fred Turney was, in error. We are advised by a family member conclusively that Fred survived the war, became a Brigadier and was awarded the O.B.E. He died on 15 December 1956 at Lugazi,Kampala, Uganda.
